In Situ Detection and Imaging of Ergot Alkaloids in Ipomea tricolor by LAESI-MS-MS and MALDI-MS
Laser ablation electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LAESI-MS) is an ambient ionization technique that allows for direct analysis of biological samples with minimal sample preparation and no desiccation of the sample. The ability to perform MS/MS fragmentation from direct ablation of samples allows for the rapid identification of small molecules without traditional extraction and LC/MS workflows. This work presents a rapid and reproducible method for the detection and identification of ergot alkaloids from Ipomoea tricolor (Morning Glory) seeds. The ability to rapidly screen and identify potential small molecule contaminants, such as ergot alkaloids, has many different industrial applications especially in the field of food safety.
